Do you just use your washing machine for clothes, towels and sheets? Me too. But recently I found a list of items that you can wash in the washing machine and I was mind blown.

#1: Shower Curtain Liners

These plastic liners can get pretty icky quickly with mildew, soap residue and hard water stains. Throw them in the washer on a gentle cycle only.

#2: Sneakers

Make sure to remove insoles and laces before you throw these in. Insoles should always be washed by hand.

#3: Lunchboxes

These need to go in on a cold cycle. Think of how many gross surfaces these come in contact with, especially at kids' schools. It's much easier to throw these in the washer than hand wash in the sink. Make sure to air dry.

#4: Yogamats

Another one for the cold cycle. Make sure you take them out before the spin cycle too.

#5: Baseball hats

Heads get sweaty. Hats are sweaty. Wash them. You can even get these cage things to keep their shape while they wash.

#6: Stuffed animals

Take one whiff of your kids stuffed animals and you'll thank me. Make sure to put them in a mesh bag or pillow case to preserve their features.

#7: LEGO bricks

Again, throw these in a bag, more to protect your machine. And don't throw them in the dryer, because they will melt.

#8: Pet collars and leashes

As long as there aren't any ornamental pieces to them, you can wash these in the washer! Might be worth using a sensitive detergent as to not irritate your pets skin.

#9: Pillows

Did you know you're actually supposed to wash these every six months? A warm gentle cycle is best and throw them in pairs. Throw a tennis ball in the dryer when you dry them to plump them back up.

#10: Sports Equipment

Shin guards, knee pads, elbow pads, and any other fabric-lined gear kids wear under their uniforms can go into the washing machine. Put them on a sanitize cycle for added cleanliness.

#11: Makeup Sponges

These need to be cleaned regularly to avoid spreading bacteria. Add some white vinegar to help disinfect.

#12: Oven Mitts

Even silicone ones can go in the wash, just don't put them on a warm cycle.

#13: Backpacks

As long as your backpack isn't made of leather or any non-washable material, throw it in. And air dry.

These tips were curated from an article that first appeared on Bob Vila's blog. Check it out.
