How To Entertain Like a Pro
Prep in advance
This might seem obvious, but if you are entertaining and have to leave the party to chop veggies, you’d better hope your guests are good at entertaining themselves! Slice, dice, and marinate everything beforehand so you spend minimal time cooking and more visiting with your company. If you really want future you to thank present you, pick up aluminum pans. They are reusable, or recyclable if you want to save yourself from washing dishes!
Feed kids and pets first
The best way to have an enjoyable evening with an adult crowd is to get kids and pets full and sleepy early. Then, instead of bugging you for dinner, they can play or relax by themselves and you can enjoy dinner or visit without interruptions.
Plan out where you’ll spend time
You know that if you don’t take your guests to a sitting area everyone ends up hanging out in the kitchen, right? So decide where you want everyone to be and make it super comfortable and inviting. Also, make sure it’s close enough to where you’re cooking that you can pop in and out quickly if you aren’t in sight the whole time. For larger groups, consider multiple spaces so smaller clusters can mingle for more varied and comfortable conversation.
Set The Mood
Part of keeping a gathering lively is keeping that conversation going. Play background music or have sports on TV on mute. Place a few strategic possible activities or conversation starters around the gathering area. You’ll have endless topics and any lulls will be filled with music instead of silence. Your guests will love how your get togethers are always so relaxed and fun!
Get a screen door
Go away bugs! Airflow and open doors are a midsummer night's dream come true, but staying up all night trying to catch the mosquito buzzing by your ear is a nightmare! Invest in a magnetic closure screen door so you, your pets, and your guests and go in and out easily and the bugs stay where they belong. The added bonus is that these screens open easily so you only need one hand to get through it.
Bonus Tip! Have the best bathroom
The number one rule when entertaining is to have extra toilet paper in the bathroom so your guests never have to call for help. Add an extra hand towel so if one gets damp you can swap out to a dry one easily. Stock the bathroom with lotion, and bonus points if you add other simple toiletries in a drawer or basket for the just-in-case moments!
Congratulations to Helene and Peter!

Why We Support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
My niece, Rayah was diagnosed at the age of two, and I have watched her suffer through pokes and lifestyle restrictions from that young age. I am always in awe of her bright and sassy personality and her will to thrive and outdo herself constantly. She is now 10 and acts just like a regular kid, and my wish is that through the support of JDRF, one day she will be able to live life symptom, needle, and worry free!
I encourage you to visit the JDRF website at www.jdrf.ca to learn more about t1d and how they are making a difference in the lives of children and their families!
