5 Tips to Create Your Ultimate Outdoor Oasis

The weather is heating up and the forecast looks promising for a long and beautiful summer season. Maximize your relaxation and enjoyment this season by setting up your outdoor space to suit your lifestyle!

Your Multipurpose Space

When you start designing your space, think about the way you currently use your outdoor area, or they way you would like to use it. Do you need room for a grill and dining area? Would a patio get in the way of fetch with the dogs? Would that unused spot be a good place for a playhouse for the kids? Your yard needs to be functional for your lifestyle, and planning ahead will help you make it beautiful as well.

Think Functionality

They run. They play. They Dig. Pets and kids are tough on yards. Designating a space where play areas or a dog run might go is a great way to keep your landscaping tidy while having space for all your uses. Do you love the sun? You may want to think about an umbrella or shade tree so you can spend more time outside even if it’s hot. Is sustainability your thing? You might even choose to plant food instead of flowers!

Maximize your Time

How much time and effort do you want to put in to developing your perfect back yard? And then how much time do you have to maintain it? Opt for plants and surfaces that match your yard care style. Depending on whether you have a green thumb or a brown thumb the foliage you choose needs to support your privacy and sun/shade goals and it also needs to be something you can maintain.

Match Your Style

Do you like modern, or rustic? Are you a neighbourly neighbour, or peace and quiet? What time of day do you spend the most time in your yard? These questions will help you decide on the best patio, plant, and privacy options for you and your family.

Options for Every Budget

Always begin with a budget! Professional landscaping can add up quickly, so knowing what you can DIY and what you’ll need help with ensures your dollars are spent where they matter most. Hardscaping options are endless, and there is something available for every size budget. You can save more by choosing plants that grow quickly from seeds or spread out to cover more area, filling in space with brick, mulch or gravel instead of greenery, and by repurposing items for outdoor use.

Bonus Tip! Don’t Forget Your Accessories!

The details will really make your outdoor space come alive, and they don’t have to be extravagant or expensive. Maybe it’s a unique table or cooler, or an up-cycled item used as a plant pot. Would string lights look amazing, or is the fire pit your focal point? Once you have the form and function, adding accessories will bring out your personality.

Why We Support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

My niece, Rayah was diagnosed at the age of two, and I have watched her suffer through pokes and lifestyle restrictions from that young age. I am always in awe of her bright and sassy personality and her will to thrive and outdo herself constantly. She is now 10 and acts just like a regular kid, and my wish is that through the support of JDRF, one day she will be able to live life symptom, needle, and worry free!

I encourage you to visit the JDRF website at www.jdrf.ca to learn more about t1d and how they are making a difference in the lives of children and their families!
