Back To Life = Back To Reality
September means back to school for most kids, and each year it just seems to get busier! Even for families without children, the reality is that increased traffic and decreasing daylight can leave you feeling pressed for time. Spending some extra time organizing your home for functionality will help you reduce your time spent tidying so you can relax when you come home at the end of a long day.
Entryway is Everything
What if your first thought when you arrive home was Ahhh, everything is so tidy? The entry to our homes is often the toughest place to keep organized, but a few updates can help keep everything in order. Add shelving, hooks, and storage to designate an area for each member of the household. Keeping items in a specific spot will reduce the Monday morning, “Have you seen my…?” Remove out of season items to reduce the clutter even further.
Busy. It’s everyone’s favourite word to hate, but the reality is that it’s the most fitting descriptor for the way we live! Our phones and computers help us keep track of so much, but there is something to be said for a physical representation of our various timelines and to-dos. Creating a central command ensures everyone know exactly what needs to be done and when. We bet just looking at it makes you feel calmer and more in control!
Meal Planning & Prep
Is it a pain? Yes. Will future you be grateful for it? Also yes. It doesn’t have to be big, fancy, or difficult. Simply chopping up a few veggies on your day off makes it more likely that you’ll opt to make a quick stir fry over ordering delivery. Decide which days you generally don’t have energy to cook and make sure you slot in easy meals. Make a little more than you will eat and suddenly you have leftovers for lunch, or freeze them to mix it up next week. Hint: PB&J sandwiches freeze well for super quick lunches!
Tweak Your Routine
Most of us start out our week in a pretty organized way. We come home, put our shoes by the door and the keys on the hook. By Friday, you can’t find your phone charger and the dog is sleeping on your suit jacket while every child in the house has either lost or remembered something that’s due today. It seems like work at first, but developing the habit of putting everything (including paperwork) away properly the first time could save you hours of cleaning, and you will know exactly where everything is every time. So take 10 extra seconds during your day to restore order to each area of your home that you use.
Try Time Blocks
You’ve probably used time blocks at work, but have you tried them at home? Designate homework time, family time, dog walking, cooking, cleaning, and anything else you need to get done in a day. If you and the kids are able to get your must-do’s done quickly, you get free time for the rest of the time block. We bet your kids get their homework done faster when they get to do something fun after! Time blocks are also a great way to help your kids learn to prioritize so assignments are done on time and there is no need for cramming.
